A Change of Focus

“The focus of subjectivity is a distorting

mirror.” Hans-Georg Gadamer

Eve, where are your thoughts!

Eve had lived close to 100 years in idyllic conditions surrounded by the love of God; a love that is patient, kind, not jealous, bragging, or arrogant; it is respectful, does not seek its own, and is not provoked; it is forgiving, rejoices in what is good, and in truth, and not in what is not good; it is a love that bears all things, trusts, never gives up, and never fails. And yet, when she was confronted with the lie, she chose to believe the liar and not the Lover - why? What you focus on becomes sharp and clear, and all other things fade and blur into the background. This is just how the mind works. A simple illustration is that of wanting to buy a car; you decide on what kind of car you would like to purchase and then suddenly you notice that car everywhere. Adam and Eve were created in the Image of God, and God classified that creation as 'very good'. They were created in righteousness, truth, and love, for righteousness, truth, and love. While living in righteousness, truth, and love, their minds were focused on righteousness, truth, and love, and that is what they would see and experience. The Hebrew word for Truth speaks of stability; Adam and Eve were created for stability and Satan’s lie was designed to bring Eve into instability. When Satan introduced the lie, he brought something contrary to righteousness, truth, and love, but not obviously so. Eve was placed in a position where she became the judge, deciding whom she believed was the truly righteous and true one; it had to be either Satan or God, it could not be both. And either way she judged, there would be a consequence for her. Now it might be that Eve looks to the fruit to discredit it as not being good to eat, or she may have looked to it as her hope of empowerment; we cannot know, but as shee looked at it, she saw that it looked good - it was a delight to the eyes, seemed good for food, and was able to make them wise… Now Satan had her, for her focus was off of what is righteousness, truth and love; it was off of their already long history of God’s righteousness, truth, and love; her focus had inverted and her desire was kindled to taste the fruit that will make her wise independently of God or anyone else.
